Match Report

Peacehaven Youth 5-4 Newhaven Youth (Half time 3-0)

The U18’s match on Sunday was an away fixture against the current league leaders Peacehaven u18’s who are currently unbeaten.

This fixture is always a competitive one with local bragging rights at stake and players knowing each other very well. Our cause was not helped when Steve, our regular goalkeeper, was unavailable because of sickness and great credit should be given to Ollie Tookey who took on this role for this match. There was a first start for the team by Ismail Diallo. We knew that Peacehaven would make a fast start and that we would have to weather this first faze before we could settle into our regular pattern. This strategy was blown away when Peacehaven scored after just 4 minutes and the move started with a free kick taken by us where the ball was cleared upfield to their striker to move forward before converting the chance from range. 0-1. We did react somewhat and created a chance soon afterwards, but the effort was blocked. Peacehaven then attacked again but Ollie was equal to the effort. The pattern of play for the next period was even with neither keeper being really troubled and as half time approached, we were quite happy at the score. However, Peacehaven then scored two goals in two minutes to transform the game. The first came from a long ball over our defence and this was collected by the striker to go on to score and the second was similar. 0-3 at half time.

The team was left very deflated because the goals were all preventable with more defensive cover and the second half was always going to be very difficult to get anything from this game. However, we were now kicking into the wind and this might help with our through passes being held up allowing our strikers to attack their defence. It was Peacehaven who created the first attack, but Ollie made a great save to keep the shot out.  Shortly after we created our first effort on goal, but the shot was from range and their keeper made a comfortable save. However, we were at last starting to peg Peacehaven back and we managed to score on 59 minutes from a free kick. This kick was taken by Ismail from our left side and the ball went right through everyone to nestle in the back of the net. 1-3. Peacehaven then woke up and scored two goals in a 5-minute spell that seemed to end any hopes by us of snatching a result. 1-5. The last 10 minutes of the match was very eventful in that we scored 3 goals that gave us a slim chance of getting a point. The first was scored by Howard from a free kick that he steered into the top corner of the goal, the second was scored by Marley following a corner taken by Howard and the third was scored by Sam. Despite our pressure Peacehaven held out, indeed they had one strike from range that crashed against our crossbar, but ultimately, they won the game 5-4.

Credit to both teams for the football played in rather difficult conditions and certainly great credit to our players who took on board what was levelled at them at half time to produce a really positive performance and to come very close to gaining a point.
