Match Report

Newhaven Youth 1-3 Saltdean Utd Youth

The 19/20 season for the U 18’s started with a home fixture against local rivals Saltdean U 18’s on Sunday 1st September.  This seasons team contains only two players from last years squad so Soren, this seasons captain, led his very young team out for the first time on Sunday.

Saltdean started the match on the front foot and scored a goal after 3 minutes from a corner which was headed into our goal. 0-1 behind. This was not a good start by us and Saltdean continued to create further chances and it was only Steve, in goal, making two excellent saves that kept us from going further behind. We did not create our first effort on goal until the 11th minute and then the shot went wide of the post. We had at last started to get into the game now and were matching Saltdean for effort and there were a couple of half chances created but not taken. We were then awarded an indirect free kick in their area because the keeper picked up a back pass and despite the kick being taken twice their defence held firm and we did not score. However we did equalise after 29 minutes from a free kick on our left side, which Joey took and he drilled the ball into the back of the net.1-1. Saltdean thought they had scored again within a minute but this “goal” was disallowed for offside. Sam had a one on one effort saved by their keeper and shortly after another effort was deflected for a corner. Just on half time Steve was forced to make another great save to keep the scores level. 1-1 at half time.

The half time message was that the team needed to increase their work-load and compete more and take the game to Saltdean. We could have scored after just 25 seconds from an attack but Joey’s effort was well saved. Steve was called into action shortly after but Saltdean did score within a couple of minutes. They played the ball through the mid-field area and their striker was given too much time and space which allowed him to shoot home from the edge of our area. 1-2.  We did react to this setback and we thought we had equalised again from an attack down our left flank but their defenders somehow stopped the ball from crossing the line. Another attack created a chance for Sam but his effort hit the crossbar. It was Saltdean who scored again after 85 minutes from a mistake by our defence who gave the ball away and their striker collected the ball to slot home. 1-3. We did not give up and again thought we had scored in injury time but their keeper made a brilliant save to keep the ball out of his goal. At the final whistle we had lost 1-3.

All in all not a great performance by us but take no credit away from Saltdean who had battled and defended very well. We have got to quickly learn to compete more and not get disheartened when things do not go right but I am sure the players will have learned from this defeat and will come back stronger for it.
