Match Report

Newhaven U18 1-2 Rottingdean Village U18 (HT 0-0)
Myles Bickmore-Vaughan (60); Rohan Doyle (82), Thomas Boyle (88)

The match on Sunday was the return home fixture against the current league’s top team, Rottingdean U18s, where a win for us would place us above them.

However this would be a very difficult match because they have only conceded six goals all season and our cause was not helped when three players pulled out of the squad just prior to the game.

This left the team with only two subs, one being a goalkeeper and the other player suffering from an injury, but we did have Myles Bickmore-Vaughan returning for us.

The opening ten minutes were pretty even with us creating one chance with the shot going wide and Rottingdean having a header going just over our crossbar. The pattern of play continued for the next period with Myles shooting wide again and Rottingdean causing Joe in goal to make a smart save.

Aaron took a corner which Myles collected but again his effort went over the bar and shortly after Myles again shot wide after great play by Scott to create the chance.

Aaron then sent a great pass forward to Toby H who took on the defenders but his cross went over the bar and away to safety. There were no further incidents from either team so at half time the score was 0-0.

The half time talk was of a steady performance but one that we felt could improve on and take the game to Rottingdean.

The pattern of play continued much as before with Rottingdean hitting our crossbar from a free kick and then Aaron hitting their crossbar from a corner a couple of minutes later.

However, we opened the scoring on the hour mark from a corner taken by Aaron where the ball found Myles in the area and he headed home. 1-0.

At this stage we were in control without really creating any further chances and slowly Rottingdean started to push us back somewhat.

Joe had to make a smart save to keep us ahead but as our players started to tire Rottingdean equalised when they played a ball over our defence and their striker ran on to slot the ball home.

We were into the last five minutes of normal time when we created an attack and a great close range shot went in but somehow the Rottingdean keeper made a brilliant save.

Then as the final whistle drew ever closer Rottingdean scored the killer goal from a corner which turned out to be the winning goal.

The team can be very proud of the way they played this match despite the score. They gave their all and at times played some very good football but Rottingdean did what a good team does and managed to effect a win that should result in them winning the league.
