Match Report

Newhaven U18 3-0 Hailsham Town U18

The latest fixture for the Newhaven U18s was a home game against Hailsham U18s who were one place and five points above Newhaven going into the match.

Jack was in goal instead of Matt and George partnered Harry in the central defence area, otherwise the side remained the same. Hailsham had got away to a steady start in the League so we knew that this game was going to be a difficult one.

We quickly got into our usual style and pressed Hailsham back in the early exchanges without really creating any goal scoring opportunities, although George did connect with a free kick but directed his header straight at the keeper.

Shortly after Jamie closed a defender down and won the ball and then took on other defenders, before slotting a shot from an angle into the net.

Hailsham then started to force us back for a time and Jack in goal had to make a save from a long range effort. We created another chance just before half time when Sam took on several defenders before passing the ball to Jamie who then sent in a shot that was saved for a corner.

Hailsham then forced a corner and the ball fell to a player on the edge of the penalty area but his shot went over the cross bar, a bit of a let off for us. 1-0 ahead at half time.

The half time discussion was positive because we were playing good football but the team was reminded that Hailsham would come out and take the game to us early in the half.

This was exactly what happened and Hailsham forced us back for the first 15 or so minutes without really creating too many goal scoring chances.

We then started to get back into our stride and Jamie picked up a loose ball from a bad back pass and went forward but his shot dipped just over the bar.

However, he did score again within five minutes when he again picked up the ball in midfield and went forward and sent his shot in and the keeper partially blocked the shot but the ball came back to Jamie who slotted the ball home. 2-0.

The game was now fairly even but a lot of the play was in the central area of the pitch but Jamie created another chance for himself but again his shot was wayward and a couple of minutes later he had another shot well saved.

Jack then had to be alert because he had to make a great save from a powerful shot with about ten minutes to go.

There had been several substitutions in the half and two of these players combined to create and score the 3rd goal. Edward won the ball on our right flank and went forward, taking on the defender, before passing the ball inside for Brandon to shoot home. 3-0.

There were no further goal scoring opportunities from either side before the final whistle so we had won a hard fought match against a very good Hailsham team.
