Match Report

Newhaven U18 0-1 Rottingdean Village U18 East (HT 0-1)

The Thursday evening fixture was a home match against Rottingdean U18s who some people consider to be a contender to win the East Division this season.

There were some changes in our line-up with Matt in goal for Jack and Brent in the defence for Ryan, otherwise the team was very similar to the one that played Little Common on Sunday.

We knew that this game was going to be a tough one but were confident that we could give a good account. Early play was good with the ball being played around well and our first chance came after just three minutes from a Kyle free kick which was met by George but his header went wide.

A few minutes later another free kick led to a shot which was well saved and then another free kick was easily saved. Rottingdean then scored from a free kick where the ball struck someone and deflected over Matt in goal.

This was a set-back but the players responded well and again took the play to Rottingdean and we did create a couple of chances, one from a Kyle run and cross but the resulting header was well wide and another free kick from William was straight at the keeper who did fumble it but nothing came of it.

We did play some very good possession football but too often the play petered out on the edge of the penalty area without really troubling the Rottingdean keeper.

The half time talk was a positive one because we were still very much in the match and the players were encouraged to continue to press but to be more positive in front of goal. The players had not listened because within a minute of the restart Chas sent over a great cross but there was no one to meet it.

We were pressing very hard and forcing Rottingdean back but it was they that then won a penalty after 57 minutes when their forward was pushed in the back. Matt saved the spot kick very well and the ball was cleared for a corner.

A few minutes later a free kick was sent over and Harry met it but his header went over the bar and the team continued to dominate the play but without scoring the goal that we wanted.

Indeed Rottingdean could have increased their lead with a rare attack but Charlie managed to clear the ball off the goal line but collided with the post injuring his knee.

In the last few minutes Matt went forward for any corner or free kicks but we just could not convert anything and the final whistle finally went and our 22-match unbeaten run had come to an end.

Although disappointing losing, the team had played very well and fully contributed to a hard fought match and if they continue with their progress they will have a good season.
