Newhaven’s Sussex County Football League Division One match at Rye United has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
The game, scheduled for Saturday afternoon (4th January) , has been in doubt all week after a pumping station at the ground had drainage issues. The picture above, taken and posted on Twitter by Hastings Observer journalist Simon Newstead (@SimonNewstead), shows the state of the pitch at the Salts on Tuesday afternoon.
Because of further adverse weather predicted, the league have allowed teams to call games off on Friday.
Rye United’s official Twitter account (@RyeUnited) confirmed the news and joked, “Tomorrow’s game between Rye and Newhaven is OFF. The pitch inspection was undertaken using sonar and a diving bell.”
The match at Fort Road between Newhaven Reserves and Hailsham Town Reserves has also been called off after a week of wet weather left the pitch unplayable.
