Newhaven Youth 9-1 Eastbourne Town Youth (HT 4-0)
The final League match for the U18’s was a home fixture against Eastbourne Town U 18’s where a win for us would ensure that we won the League by 8 points. The squad available was probably the strongest that we could play and for many of the team this would be their final league game as an under 18 player.
Eastbourne Town very sportingly gave our team a guard of honour, as champions, onto the pitch and thanks should go to them for this gesture. The opening 15 minutes of the game was fairly uneventful with most of the play in the midfield area and no real problems for either defence or keepers. However on the 17 minute mark we did score our opening goal when the ball was played forward and the E/B keeper came out and he was challenged by Marley and the ball fell to Marley to slot home from distance and an acute angle. 1-0. This goal woke us up and we scored again 4 minutes later when a fierce shot by Henry was partially saved but the ball fell to Luke to nod in from close range. 2-0. Eastbourne then had their first attack but their effort went just wide of the post and a couple of minutes later they won a corner from which a header went over the bar. Just on the half hour mark we scored again from a move that started from our defence who passed the ball onto Toby and he played the ball forward to Luke who crossed it into the area for Henry to shoot home, a really good team goal. 3-0. We were now controlling the game and scored our 4th goal and Henry was involved again when he collected the ball and passed it inside to Fraser who shot from range and with a slight deflection went into the back of the net. 4-0 at half time.
The team talk was very positive but that the team should continue to press forward in the second half and finish the league in a positive manner. This is exactly what the players did and Henry opened the scoring in the half when he collected the ball from the keeper following his save from a Marley shot and slotted the ball home. 5-0. Marley then got into the act when he collected the ball played forward to him and scored from close range. 6-0. Toby then increased the total when he collected the ball, turned and chipped the keeper form an angle, a very good goal. 7-0. Luke then scored two further goals in a 10 minute spell to increase our lead to 9-0. However to Eastbourne’s credit they never gave up trying to play and got their reward deep into injury time from a mistake by Peachy in goal and they converted the chance. 9-1.
As the final whistle went our winning run in 2019 had continued and after the post- match handshakes were completed the team was presented with their League winning medals and the League trophy was held aloft by team captain George Todd. Again sportingly Eastbourne Town players remained on the pitch to congratulate our team.
Squad everyone apart from Steve Beasley.
The final match for the team is the champion of champions final on the 5th May at Hassocks F C, our opponents as yet unknown.
