Bexhill Utd 0 v 5 Newhaven Ladies
Scorers: Chloe Winchester (2), Georgia Ungoed (1) Maddie Cannon (1), Lauren Smith (1)
Newhaven Ladies made it back to back wins for the first time since the beginning of November 2018 with a comfortable five goals to nil win away at Bexhill.
Despite a goalless first half the Dockers racked up five goals in the second half to take all three points.
However the first half was not without chances as Chloe Winchester headed just over from Lauren Smith’s early corner and then from a square ball from Georgia Ungoed blazed over the bar from the edge of the 6 yard box, only to be saved by the offside flag.
Paige Ripley also had a chance from the edge of the box and Smith sent in an inviting cross from the left which just evaded Chelsea Cook at the far post.
At the other end a few shots from outside the box failed to trouble Annie Hills and the Dockers defence stood firm. With ten minutes before the break a nasty injury to Jas Godden who was pushed into the outer fence by the goal line enforced the first change. The Bexhill striker was booked and Godden was replaced by Maddie Cannon.
A further chance before the half fell to Winchester who had a free kick from outside the box but the shot was too high as the teams went in all square at the break.
The second half brought better fortunes for the Dockers who imposed themselves on the game moving the ball quicker and becoming more decisive in front of goal. The first chance of the half ended with a goal as good work from Winchester and Ungoed in the middle allowed Ungoed to wriggle through a couple of challenges and lay the ball into the box past the keeper for Maddie Cannon who made a late run from the right and bravely got to the ball first before the Bexhill defender to give the Dockers the lead (0-1).
The second soon followed when Steph Harrison picked the ball up out wide and crossed to find the run of Winchester who headed goal wards which the keeper failed to hold and the ball dropped into the goal (0-2).
The Dockers were now in control and the third arrived when Lucy Collinson won the ball in midfield and played a ball over the top from Ungoed who raced past the defenders and made no mistake and gave Newhaven a 0-3 lead with 25 minutes to play.
Paige Fowler and Kerri Forshaw were introduced for Chelsea Cook and Paige Ripley and the Dockers continued to dominate and again it was Harrison and Winchester who linked up as Harrison played a fine ball through and Winchester made no mistake placing the ball in the bottom corner (0-4).
At the other end Annie Hills had to be on her toes to save smartly down to her right at the near post as Bexhill pushed players forward but it was the Dockers who scored again as Lauren Smith battled high up the pitch to win the ball and harassed the Bexhill defence to make a mistake and then guided the loose ball into the net to make it 0-5 and all three points to the visitors.
Joint Manager Andy Cook was pleased with the performance; ‘We took a while to get going and were a bit sluggish first half. I think the narrow pitch didn’t help us much and we failed to find much space but we defended well and rarely looked in trouble. At half time Alex and I asked them to step it up a bit and move the ball quicker and be decisive in front of goal and they certainly did that. Great to see both wide players score and show perseverance high up the pitch. Chloe makes it five goals in two games now and George two in two. But everyone played their part. Solid in midfield with Lucy and Ellie taking control in a physical battle and special mention to the defence and Annie in goal who thoroughly deserved the first clean sheet of the season!’
