Newhaven fall to a narrow defeat at home to Hassocks.

The game was quite a cagey affair right from the opening whistle and chances were hard to come by, Newhaven thought they were going to be in when Freddie Beale met Kyle Woolven’s cross at the far post, but the assistant referee raised his flag for offside just as Beale headed the ball wide.

Moments later, Tristan Jarvis crossed the ball into the area where it was headed out as far as James Rhodes, but his shot was wide of the upright.

It was then Rhodes turn to become provider as first he set up Woolven and then minutes later Lee Robinson, but both players shots on goal were comfortably saved by the Hassocks keeper.

Hassocks then broke the deadlock against the run of play with their first real chance, a cross from the right was met by the in rushing Hassocks midfielder who had the jump on Beale and powered his header past a rooted Jake Buss in the Dockers goal, 0-1.

Beale had a shot saved before half time but that saw the end of a frustrating half.

The second half was played in a similar vein, with Newhaven doing most of the attacking but finding it hard to get through the Hassocks rear guard.

Matt Gunn went on a nice solo run from his own half but his shot at the end of it was well tipped over the bar.

Possibly inspired by Gunn’s run, Woolven then ran through from half way avoiding several tackles before hitting a low drive goalwards, but another Hassocks block protected their lead.

Hassocks almost doubled their advantage when a slip let them in behind the Dockers defence, but Buss was equal to the shot and saved well.

With time running out Hassocks were reduced to 10 men when their substitute received a second yellow card.

Newhaven again pushed for the equaliser, Harry Docherty won the ball on the left and his low cut back was struck well by Callum Connor but was unfortunately at a good saving height and the Hassocks keeper tipped it wide.

Newhaven had one last effort from Beale but it did feel like one of those days when again the shot was blocked by some desperate defending.

So full time 0-1, a bad day at the office for the Dockers in a game of few clear cut chances, but they stay second in the league with 11 games still to go.

Next up, the Dockers look to bounce back when they travel to Loxwood on Saturday.
