Pagham 1-3 Newhaven (HT 1-1)
Robbie Keith (38), Lee Robinson (69), Callum Connor (86)
Newhaven back to winning ways with a strong performance away at Pagham.
There was a last minute change to the starting line up when Lukas Franzen-Jones picked up an injury in the warm up, this meant Tom Cooklin took the 10 shirt for the match.
Newhaven started the game well and it seemed that it would only be a matter of time before they’d find a breakthrough, Ian Robinson was not being picked up by the Pagham defence and his low cross was deflected behind before Ebou Jallow could get the important touch.
Jallow almost turned provider but his intended pass to Kyle Woolven was again turned wide by the Pagham defence before it could be converted.
It was Pagham who took the lead though, a deep cross was headed down on the edge of the area and it was a Pagham player who reacted quickest and poked the ball past Jake Buss, 0-1.
The goal seemed to give Pagham a lift and they started to grow into the game, Buss had to make a superb save tipping over a drive from a near post corner routine.
Newhaven had a corner of their own shortly after, it was cleared out of the area but only as far as Harry Docherty who swung the ball back in for Robbie Keith to head home from close range, 1-1.
Half time arrived with the scores level and the game finely balanced, both sides having had chances.
Newhaven came out much brighter for the second half, pressing high and fast and allowing Pagham very little time to settle.
A deflected cross from Ian Robinson was only half cleared and dropped inside the area, Woolven attempted an improvised over head kick but the ball looped into the keepers hands.
Woolven then repaid the favour playing in Robinson down the left, but the ball got stuck under Robinsons feet as he attempted to shoot and the defence were able to clear.
Newhaven then had a great chance to take the lead, Woolven’s in-swinging corner was met by Jallow but his free header went wide of the post.
Just as the crowd began to think it might be one of those days, the Dockers did take the lead. Cooklin’s ball over the top allowed Lee Robinson to run through and calmly slot past the advancing Pagham keeper, 2-1.
Pagham were now finding it difficult to really threaten Newhaven’s goal and the action was all at one end, a couple of inviting Woolven crosses from the right caused momentary panic in the Pagham back line, but they were managing to just about clear their lines.
With time running out Ian Robinson was fouled in the middle of the pitch, the referee signalled ‘play on’ as the ball had found its way to Lee Robinson’s feet and he slipped the ball through for Callum Connor to run through and put the icing on the cake by slotting home for 3-1.
So a good win for Newhaven at a notoriously difficult place to get three points.
Next up, the Dockers welcome Hassocks to the Trafalgar Ground on Saturday.
