Hurstpierpoint U18 0-3 Newhaven U18 (HT 0-2)
Tommy Linger, Harry Ovenden, Arthur Fleming
A massive congratulations to Newhaven FC under 18’s (Mid Sussex) upon their first win of the season, 0 – 3 away from home against a very strong Hurstpierpoint under 19’s squad whom prior to todays game were sitting second from top of the league table with 15 points from 8 games played – The Dockers, prior to todays victory were and remain joint bottom of the league on goal difference, currently with 6 points from 10 games played.
The recent change of squad management certainly seems to have administered an injection of pace, power, passing and passion into these young footballers.
I feel it fair to say that the neutral observer would say (he did) that purely upon possession Hurstpierpoint just edged the first half having squandered two glorious goal scoring opportunities from 10 yards out both guilt edged chances being blasted over the bar, not to mention Rylee Meltons goal line clearance however, it’s goal’s that count and it was The Dockers whom went into the break 0 – 2 up with goals coming from Tommy Linger a shot from 30 yards out smashing the underside of the cross bar ricocheting down and over the line again, the second Newhaven goal slightly against the run of play (according to the neutral observer that is) some slick interchanging passing resulted in a scything grass cutting shot on the turn from the edge of the box from Harry Ovenden, inside the left post, leaving the keeper with no chance.
The Dockers bossed the second half from the off, the pace of the forwards, the dogged determination of the mid field and the rock solid defence completely over ran a squad whom according to the neutral observer had thought that it was just a matter of turning up and collecting the 3 points.
Some of the Hurstpierpoint players lost their discipline, shape and heart and were reduced to a shadow of their first half display unfortunately, things only got worse when two Hurstpierpoint players were “sin binned” within quick succession for dissent.
Now down to nine players The Dockers took advantage and ran riot cutting the seemingly surrendered Hurstpierpoint defence to shreds, another slick move played from the back down the left flank, a long pass into acres of space for the sharp footed quick thinking Arthur Fleming to slot home.
There were 13 Newhaven FC Men of the Match on show today all fighting, running, talking, thinking and encouraging each other as a Footballing unit however, the stats do require and will indicate that Louis “Lev” Tant with a magnificent exabition of goal keeping was the overall MoM with Josh Lusted, whom never stopped running, not too far behind.
Full Time 0 – 3 at long last!
