Newhaven 4-0 Langney Wanderers (HT 2-0)
Lee Robinson (25, 41, 73), Ian Robinson (59)
Newhaven move back up to 2nd in the league after a comfortable win over Langney Wanderers.
Whilst the first few minutes were a little scrappy, it wasn’t long before Newhaven were in total control of this game. Langney offered very little going forward and it seemed like a matter of time before Newhaven would be in front.
The first real chance came when Lee Robinson backheeled the ball into the path of younger brother Ian, whose shot from a tight angle struck the far post and went wide.
The Robinson brothers were soon at it again, Lee capitalised on a defensive mix up and cut the ball back for Ian but his shot flew over the bar.
The Dockers finally made the breakthrough when a Harry Docherty throw was accidentally flicked on by a Langney defender, the ball bouncing to the far post for an unmarked Lee Robinson to head home from 2 yards out for probably the simplest of his 45 goals (at this point) this season, 1-0.
Newhaven’s second came when a long ball over the top from Tom Cooklin deceived the Langney defence and allowed Lee Robinson to once again race clear and calmly lob the advancing keeper, 2-0.
The Dockers almost had a third before the break, another Docherty throw was this time met by the head of Matt Gunn but his header was brilliantly tipped onto the post and the rebound was held by the Langney keeper.
Langney finally had a half chance at the beginning of the second half, a long ball bounced into the Newhaven area but the Langney striker could only loop the ball over the bar due to good pressure from Jake Buss.
Newhaven were soon back on the front foot, and it was Ian Robinson again causing the problems, his surge into the box and subsequent cut back meant Lukas Franzen-Jones had a chance to extend the lead, but unfortunately his shot flew over the top.
Newhaven’s third did arrive shortly after though, Naim Rouane’s pass found Lee Robinson whose flick then set Ian Robinson clear, and he made no mistake smashing a left foot shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle, 3-0.
With 15 minutes left, Ian Robinson went on another run down the left and was this time halted by being shoved to the floor inside the area, the ref had no hesitation awarding a penalty and Lee Robinson completed hat trick drilling the ball in from the spot, 4-0.
After being a spectator for most of the match, Buss showed excellent awareness with 5 minutes left when he made a great save low to his right to deny Langney a consolation from their only real effort on target.
This 3 points, along with Horsham YMCA’s defeat, means the Dockers move back up to second and are well placed still having 2 games in hand on third placed Horsham and the current leaders Chichester.
Next up, the Dockers welcome Arundel on Saturday, after which the January 50/50 club draw will be made.
