Horsham YMCA 0-0 Newhaven (HT 0-0)

The top two sides met at Gorings Mead this weekend, with Newhaven continuing their excellent league form following an entertaining 0-0 draw with the league leaders.
Horsham came out of the blocks fast and were knocking the ball around comfortably in the early stages, gradually though Newhaven started to grow into the game and were soon looking dangerous on the counter.
In what was a very competitive first half, Lee Robinson was the closest to scoring but his low shot was well saved by the YMCA keeper.
Horsham’s best attempt was a long range drive that Jake Buss acrobatically tipped round the post.
Late in the half, Rhys Smith’s long throw caused chaos in the Horsham area and the ball fell to Kyle Woolven on the edge of the box but his goal bound shot was deflected just wide of the post by a Horsham head.
So half time arrived with the score locked at 0-0, Horsham had edged the possession stat but the better chances had probably fallen to Newhaven.
The second half started brightly for the Dockers with Ian Robinson and Woolven getting on the ball a lot more and the away side began to dominate proceedings.
Ian Robinson went on a great run down the left, cut inside to shoot but had his effort blocked by a Horsham defender.
Next, Tom Cooklin rolled a free kick to Woolven whose drive and subsequent follow up were both blocked by desperate defending.
That was pretty much the story of the half, with Newhaven forcing numerous openings only for Horsham to throw their bodies in the way.
At the other end of the pitch Buss was relatively untroubled and didn’t really have a shot to save all half thanks to excellent defending from Matt Gunn, Smith and especially Jayson Sowter who was a rock at the back.
Newhaven’s midfield duo of Harry Docherty and Naim Rouane, making his first appearance of the season, were pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch and releasing the front three to try to find a way through the massed Horsham defence.
Lee Robinson looked like breaking the deadlock but was again frustrated by the keeper who got down well to deny him and turn the ball wide for a corner.
Horsham were awarded a last minute free kick for a debatable hand ball, but thankfully the shot was high and wide.
Final score 0-0.
Newhaven thoroughly deserved the point, and based on their second half performance may even feel a little disappointed not to come away with all three.
Next up, the Dockers welcome Lancing to the Trafalgar Ground on Saturday.
