Match Report

Newhaven U18 3-1 Mile Oak U18

The latest match for the U 18’s was a home fixture against Mile Oak U18’s in the county cup competition where a win would place us in the quarter finals.

The squad was a familiar one and we hoped to repeat the League win against our opponents when we played them on their home pitch earlier in the season.

Early play was very positive with Henry making several good runs on our left flank and beating defenders to deliver some positive crosses into the area. Aaron took a free kick that had to be saved and Drew had a chance at the far post but his effort went wide but our early pressure did result in a goal on 12 minutes. Aaron took another free kick to the far post and the ball found its way to Drew on the edge of the area and he slotted the ball home, 1-0.

A minute later Kirk sent in a powerful effort but this was well saved by the M O keeper. However Mile Oak started to get a foothold in the game and they created a chance but the effort went into the side netting. We then had an effort by Louis Bass well saved but it was M O who scored next when we gave the ball away in mid-field and the ball was played forward before their striker converted the chance from distance. 1-1.

In the last 15 minutes of the half both teams had chances but Steve in our goal made a great save and Toby had his effort well saved by the M O keeper. 1-1 at half time.

The pattern of play was very positive for the opening 25 minutes and we had scored an early goal but we had allowed M O back into the game by stopping doing the simple things and overcomplicating our play. This needed to change and we needed to get back to basics and impose ourselves gain.

The pattern of play did improve and we controlled the game for most of the half, restricting M O to the occasional break away effort but at no time did Steve in goal have to make a save. Kirk created a chance but their keeper saved his effort in a one to one situation and several crosses just evaded our players although Henry’s shot beat the keeper but not the crossbar.

Time was running out and we were now in injury time when we scored 2 goals, the first by Kirk from an Aaron corner which was over hit. However the ball found its way to Fraser who sent in a cross for Kirk to head home and shortly after Henry collected the ball in mid-field and went forward past the stranded keeper and despite a couple of defenders getting back he converted the chance. 3-1 at full time.

This was a hard earned win against a good team but our pressure finally told and we had booked our place in the quarter finals.
