Long Lane Ladies 1 v 8 Newhaven Ladies / League Cup  1st Round

Scorers: Chloe Winchester (5), Lauren Smith (3)

The Dockers made the long trip to Blackheath in London and cruised into the second round of the league cup with a routine win over Long Lane . The eight goals were shared between two stand out players with Chloe Winchester getting five and Lauren Smith three. However every player in the squad had a fine game which made the long journey worthwhile.

It took the Dockers a little while to get into their stride with a scrappy opening twenty minutes however it was Smith who opened the scoring from a corner (0-1). Winchester then went close with a header which was well saved by the keeper. With half an hour gone the Dockers slowly began to dominate the game and a fine flick on from Paige Fowler found Smith who made no mistake finding the back of the net for number two (0-2).

A mistake from the Long Lane keeper minutes later when she dropped the ball allowed Winchester to nip in and score her first and Newhaven’s third (0-3) and then two minutes later Maddie Cannon played a fine ball through to Winchester who smashed her shot into the goal for 0-4. The Dockers were rampant now and chances came thick and fast with Fowler shooting just wide, Jas Godden heading just wide from a corner and Winchester just wide with a shot but then Winchester did get her third when Cannon again laid a perfect ball through and Winchester made no mistake smashing it off the keeper and into the roof of the net (0-5).

The final action of the half came just before the whistle when Fowler pressed the ball on the edge of the penalty area and laid it to Winchester who scored her 4th and the Dockers 6th to make 0-6 at half time.

With the game now over as a contest this didn’t prevent Newhaven continuing to press and soon after the break they got the 7th goal  as Katie Franks on for Cannon just failed to score at the far post but Fowler managed to retrieve the ball and lay it to Smith who made no mistake (0-7).

Another great cross from Smith found Franks at the far post but she couldn’t guide the ball into the goal. Jade Palmer then found space in the middle and cut through before unleashing a fierce drive which went just wide of the post.

Long Lane then mounted a rare attack and when they broke clear  the striker shot at goal which was blocked by Godden’s arm and a penalty was awarded and despatched to give the home side a consolation. But Newhaven were not finished and a corner was headed on by Ellie Coade and Winchester pounced to score her 5th and make it 1-8.

Newhaven had further attacks with the returning Lucy Collinson going close twice in quick succession firstly from a header from Fowlers free kick which was saved by the keeper then a driving run through the middle and shot from just outside the box well saved.

And the final chance in the closing minutes fell to Franks who was played in by Winchester but her shot into the corner just drifted wide of the far post.

A convincing win in the end and now onto Herne Bay in the next round on December 2nd.

Joint-Manager Alex Ladd was pleased with the performance and had this to say;’ A fantastic performance from the ladies today with some really good quality football played. After a long drive up there everyone applied themselves with a commitment and desire that was evident from the first whistle. We grew into the game, showcasing some quality passing football and solid defending from front to back. Our patience in the early exchanges was rewarded with a fantastic 25 minute period in the first half. It was especially pleasing to see us score 8 goals and but for an unfortunate penalty decision, kept Long Lane to very few chances on goal. Our passing at times was evidence of the hard work the ladies have been putting in in training. There was an awful lot of positives to be taken from the game, in particular, Chloe scoring 5 and Lauren getting a well-earned hat trick. Steph also had a brilliant game at right back. Very pleasing to see Maddie performing well and to see Lucy make a long awaited return from injury. The midfield were excellent and the back 4 worked very well as unit. Well done ladies it was great to watch you play and we look forward to the Saltdean game on Sunday.

Joint-Manager Andy Cook was also happy with the afternoons work;’ After a long journey this could have been a tricky game but after a slow-ish start we really got going and played some very good football in the final 25 minutes of the first half. Chloe looked back to her best with some really excellent finishes and Lauren was the tormentor down the left with some brilliant goals and crosses. Maddie Cannon also had a very good game on the right and it was pleasing that the whole squad had a really good run out. Great to see Lucy back playing again after a couple of months out as well and she looked comfortable and was unlucky not to score. Really pleased to win well which made the long journey up and back worthwhile.’
