Match Report

Newhaven 2-1 Rusthall (HT 0-0)
Lee Robinson (65, 68)

Newhaven progress to the 2nd round of the FA Vase with a narrow home win.

The first half was one to forget for both sides, with very little goalmouth action to speak of.

Newhaven seemed very below par and the crowd were growing anxious as it seemed that the game was there to be won if the Dockers could get out of first gear.

Newhaven were looking slightly the better side but seemed unable to find a way through the Rusthall defence, at the other end defensive slips by the Dockers were giving Rusthall opportunities of their own, but poor finishing meant the half time whistle went with the score still 0-0.

Newhaven came out with renewed purpose after the break and slowly began to dominate possession.

Lee Robinson forced a good save from the Rusthall keeper and then from the resulting corner Robbie Keith’s header was cleared off the line.

The breakthrough finally came around the hour mark, Kyle Woolven played Tristan Jarvis in behind and his driven cross was finished off by Robinson, 1-0.

It wasn’t long before the lead was doubled, Ebou Jallow played in Robinson who faked a one-two before driving forward and firing left footed across the keeper into the far corner, 2-0.

Newhaven went close to extending their lead on a number of occasions, Woolven was just wide with a good strike before Seb Saunders nearly tucked home at the front post and then Rob Malila had a diving header over the bar.

It seemed that Newhaven were going to see the game out comfortably, but with time running out Rusthall were awarded a penalty which they duly fired home, Final score 2-1.

The Dockers were not on top form but as always in cup matches the result is what matters and, despite making hard work of it, Newhaven progress to the next round of the FA Vase.

Next up for the Dockers is a Peter Bentley cup 3rd round match against Crawley Down Gatwick, at home under the lights this Tuesday.
