Match Report

Newhaven U18 3-2 (aet) Montpelier Villa U18 (HT 0-0)

The game this Sunday for the U 18’s was a home fixture against Montpelier Villa U 18’s in the SCFA Probee Youth Cup. When the two teams met earlier in the season in the League the result was a draw after we let a three goal advantage slip so we were hoping to improve on this performance.

The squad was depleted because of various reasons but the team available was still a strong one and expectations were that we could continue into the next round of this cup. Montpelier opened the half better and were playing the ball around and created the first chance but squandered it. We then had our first chance from a free kick which Marley took, hitting the ball in low across the area but his effort was saved for a corner and he forced the keeper into another save shortly after. Montpelier then forced Peachy to make a couple of good saves and they were pressing us back and should have scored a couple of goals in a 10 minute spell but they spurned all of the chances. With half time approaching George Todd sent over a good cross that was met by Myles but his header went over the bar. M V then had another chance to score but again the effort went over our bar. 0-0 at half time.

The performance in the first half was very much under par and the players were told that they were very lucky not to be 4 or 5 goals behind. However they were still very much in the game but to get a result they would have to play a lot better, start to move the ball around a lot quicker and be more assertive on the ball. We did create an early chance when Drew sent over a great cross but there was no one in the area to connect with the ball and the chance was gone. A couple of minutes later M V scored when we did not close the scorer down on the edge of our area and he sent in a powerful shot to finally beat Peachy. 0-1. M V were in control and they sent one effort wide of the post and Peachy had to make another save to keep us in the game. However slowly we did get a foothold in the game and scored an equaliser, it came from a cross by Drew that the keeper only parried and Marley headed in the rebound. 1-1. This only seemed to spur M V on and they hit our crossbar twice in a few minutes towards the end of the half but there was no further goals so at full time it remained 1-1. This resulted in an extra 30 minutes of play to try to get a result.

Peachy was called on to make a save in the first minute of extra time but it was M V who scored again when they were awarded a penalty. 1-2. However their lead was short-lived because Marley again equalised following great play by Myles who crossed the ball into the area and Marley thumped the ball into the net. 2-2. The 2nd half of extra time started and we were finding a little more space and started to take the game to M V and scored our third goal with 8 minutes to go. The ball was played up-field to Marley who shot from the edge of the area and into the back of the net. 3-2 ahead for the first time in the match.  However M V were not done and only another two great saves by Peachy kept our lead that lasted to the final whistle.

We had won the match but this was not one of our better performances and we rode our luck at times with M V spurning several chances and great keeping by Peachy helped to secure the win. Hailsham away next week and we will need to play a lot better.
