Newhaven 3-1 Haywards Heath Town (HT 1-1)
Lee Robinson (3, 88), Tristan Jarvis (85); Melford Simpson (44)
Newhaven bounced back from their midweek defeat with an excellent 3-1 win against title challengers Haywards Heath Town at the Trafalgar Ground on Saturday afternoon.
It is only the Dockers’ fourth home league win of the season, but was certainly one of the their best victories in what has been an inconsistent campaign.
The game started well for Newhaven and they took the lead after just two minutes when Kyle Woolven’s pass was misjudged by centre back Jamahl King and Lee Robinson raced through to score.
The hosts held the lead until a minute before half-time when Scott Chamberlain’s cross from deep was superbly headed in to Jake Buss’ net by striker Melford Simpson.
The second half remained tight until five minutes before the end when Tristan Jarvis’ excellent touch and volley crashed in off the post to restore Newhaven’s lead.
And just two minutes later they made the game safe. Good work down the right from Freddie Beale and 17-year-old Tom Cooklin saw the latter cross for Robinson who tapped in from close range.
It is Newhaven’s fourth win from five games and has seen them close in on the top eight who just a few weeks ago looked out of sight.
