Match Report

Jarvis Brook U18 2-5 Newhaven U18 (HT 2-2)

The latest match for the U18s on Sunday was the away return fixture against Jarvis Brook U18s played on the Limekiln Playing Fields in Crowborough.

There was an enforced change of goalkeeper because Joe had a non-football injury and his position was covered by Aaron and there was a bench first for Tom Cooklin, otherwise the squad was as normal.

We needed a quick and positive start to put the hosts under pressure and we achieved this and were rewarded with a goal after just 3 minutes. Spencer went on a run down our left flank before crossing the ball over where Alfie H connected to slot the ball home, this was the start we wanted.

In the next 20 minutes or so we were the attacking team down the slope without really causing J B too many problems and they were relying on counter attacks which again we repelled without undue alarms.

Then Josh went on one of his runs before unleashing a shot that had the keeper beaten but the crossbar saved J B from going further behind.

Indeed a couple of minutes later it was J B who scored the equalising goal when they played the ball through our midfield and the attacking striker scored from distance.

This goal woke us up and we started to attack more and were awarded a penalty on the half hour mark and Spencer converted the spot kick to fire us ahead once more.

Just before half time Alfie H sent in a great shot but the keeper was equal to it and tipped the ball out for a corner.

Then as half time approached Josh was given a red card for his reaction for being stamped on and to rub salt into our wounds J B equalised after we gave the ball away in midfield and the subsequent attack saw them score. 2-2 at half time.

The message to the players was that despite only having 10 players we could still win this match but the players would have to work extremely hard and play very well to achieve this.

Well the second half got much worse for us when Toby PD was sent off for a bad tackle thus reducing us to 9 players so the task was now much tougher.

J B, now kicking down the slope, put us under a great deal of pressure and forced us to defend but we managed to protect Aaron in goal for the most part but he had to make a very good save on the hour mark to keep us in the game.

Then we managed to gain a foothold in the match and started to create some decent moves up the slope which resulted in a couple of goals.

The first was from an Aaron goal kick when the ball was collected by Spencer who controlled it and took on the defenders before slotting the ball home. 3-2.

Five minutes later Spencer won the ball in midfield from the J B defenders and again slotted the ball home. 4-2.

These goals seemed to deflate J B and although they tried to push us back again we seemed quite comfortable and just before the final whistle we scored again. We were awarded a free kick which George S took and his fierce shot beat the keeper. 5-2 at the final whistle.

This result keeps us in touch with Rottingdean the current League leaders who we play next week but every single player deserves much credit for this result as they all worked their ********** off and kept playing football.
