Jarvis Brook U18 3-2 Newhaven U18 (HT 2-1)

This Sunday’s match was an away fixture in the League Cup 1st round against last week’s opponents Jarvis Brook.

The players were told to expect a reaction from Jarvis Brook following last week’s result and this is exactly what happened. There were changes to the team with Aaron, Chas and Dev missing for various reasons but with Kyle making his first appearance of the season.

Jarvis Brook, kicking down hill, did show a reaction to last week’s result and pushed us back for most of the opening 10 minutes or so but we did create our first chance just after this initial period. Kyle sent a cross over from our left flank and the ball was sent back over from the other flank but Dan just missed the ball on the far post.

Then Harry S had a long range shot that missed the target and just after Kyle sent over another great cross but Scott missed the target with his header. Dan then forced the Brook keeper into a very good save from his effort. Brook were then awarded a free kick but the resulting shot went over our cross bar.

It was Brook who opened the scoring after 34 minutes from a corner that somehow was not cleared and one of their strikers converted the chance.

We needed a response and we equalised within a couple of minutes when the ball was played through midfield to Dan who advanced and slotted the ball past the keeper. Brook then scored again within a couple of minutes when they were awarded a penalty which they duly converted.

Again we had to respond and again we did creating a couple of chances before half time but one shot went wide and the other was well saved by the keeper. 1-2 at half time.

The first half performance was not too bad but we had not played as well as we know we can and had thrown away our hard work equalising by giving away a cheap penalty. However, we were still very much in this game and it was all to play for in the second half.

We did start more positively and created a couple of chances in the first 15 minutes of the half. Dillon played a great ball forward to Dan but he missed the opportunity and a great move from midfield resulted in Kyle collecting the ball and forcing another very good save from their keeper.

However, our pressure continued and we equalised on the hour mark from a corner. The ball was crossed over and we forced their keeper into three saves before Harry M headed in, their keeper then made yet another good save a few minutes later from a header.

Brook had a long range shot that went well over our bar and just after Kyle was fed by Dan and his shot hit their bar and then Dan had a close range header well saved.

Rather against the run of play Brook then scored again when the ball was played through our midfield and their striker collected and slotted home.

Time was running out so we pressed forward at every opportunity but despite our efforts we could not break through. In injury time we were awarded a free kick which was taken by Kyle who found Spencer who headed the ball back onto the edge of the area but the resulting shot went over the bar.

The final whistle went and we were out of the competition. However, the team had played very well for much of the time and it is interesting that Brook’s man of the match was their keeper.
