Match Report

The young Dockers take the trip along the coast to play Eastbourne in the third round of the Cup.

Eastbourne are a league below Newhaven but have had a good start to the season as they are top of Division 4 having not lost a game so far, so the Young Dockers know they are in for a real test today. The first half starts with probing from both sides, Aaron Winser sees a shot from outside the box just go the wrong side of the post and after some good passing in midfield through Louis Bass and Harry Woodward the ball finds its way through to Myles B-Vaughan. His first time shot is just too high and flies over the bar. At the other end Eastbourne have a very quick striker and Newhaven are having to be on their guard as he is proving quite a handful – he breaks from the centre of midfield and shoots low to Joe Still in the Newhaven’s goal but Joe is equal to it and pushes it round the post. Louis then nearly gets on the end of Aaron’s cut back but the defender get his clearance in just in time to stop Louis from opening the scoring. But it’s Eastbourne who get the first goal when their striker evades Harry Hudson and shoots for goal, Joe gets his hands to it but the ball just goes over the line and Eastbourne show why they haven’t been beaten this season as they are disrupting Newhaven’s passing game with their own mixtue of aggression and long ball to their quick striker. Newhaven nearly get on level terms just before halftime when Aaron just can’t quite keep the ball in after a run that leaves 2 defenders in his wake, the half ends with the Young Dockers 1 down.

The second half proves to be a completely different game as Newhaven moved the two Harrys round with Harry Woodward going to centre back and Harry Clark going in midfield on the left side and from the outset Newhaven start to make their class show. Aaron and Myles both go very close with shots that just miss the target and then Harry C sees a shot saved by the Eastbourne keeper at the expense of a corner and from the kick taken by Aaron, Myles meets the ball with a downward header that ends up in the corner of the net. The young Dockers are now right back on their game and they push forward with much more purpose and take the lead 5 minutes later when the Eastbourne defence don’t clear their lines and Harry C is on hand to calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner. They don’t have to wait long for their third as Aaron’s free kick into the box isn’t cleared and the ball hits the base of the post but Louis is on hand to back heel the ball over the line as it bounces back from the inside of the upright. Eastbourne have no answer to Newhaven now as they are over run in midfield with the young Dockers playing the way we know they can, their passing is much more pleasing on the eye than it was in the first half. They add a fourth when a move involving Brad Tait and Myles releases Aaron, he beats his man and finishes in style as he slots the ball inside the far post as the Eastbourne keeper comes out.

Newhaven’s extra class is showing as Eastbourne are offering nothing at the other end as Harry W has had an excellent half at centre back and blotted out Eastbourne’s dangerous striker, and when he moves to his right Connor Blaydes, who is also having a good game at left back, snuffs him out. Newhaven have stopped Eastbourne’s main threat .Newhaven are now keeping the ball well and not giving it away as was the problem in the first half. The Eastbourne defence is again put under pressure and they give the ball away to the worst possible player they could give it to – Aaron – and he is clean through on goal and again he calmly slots it pass the Eastbourne keeper into the net. 5 -1 to the young Dockers and the turn round is complete – there is still time for Joe to make an excellent save from a penalty kick low to his right which makes up for his disappointment for not stopping Eastbourne’s goal in the first half, Myles also sees a great shot after another good move involving Tayim Miah and Harry C hit the underside of the bar which the following up Brad just unable to force the rebound over the line, this proves to be the last action of the game and Newhaven run out comfortable winners in the end 5 -1 .

Another good second half performance as Newhaven prove how much fitter they now are as they seem to get stronger in the second half of games as the training from new coach James Mackenzie is improving fitness and technical ability and they now have a great team spirit that allows them not to let heads go down when behind.
