The latest match on Sunday was against Peacehaven U18 in the Dennis Probee Youth Cup held at Peacehaven.
There were team changes with Jonno Bennett starting his first game and Ian Robinson, back from injury, included in the squad, as was Rhys Williams.
After the recent rain the pitch was greasy but otherwise in good condition and both teams were able to play a passing game. The first half was fairly evenly matched although Peacehaven were pressing more but stout defending, good goalkeeping and a few wayward finishes ensured the score remained 0-0.
Then on the half hour Jay Thornton won the ball and passed it out to William Herriott who crossed it to Jonno who attempted to lob the keeper. The keeper saved the first effort but the ball dropped to Jonno who stabbed the ball home.
Peacehaven reacted well but despite a lot of pressure they did not score before half time, indeed Jonno had another chance to score but his shot was taken rather hastily and went well wide. 1-0 at half time.
The team talk was to expect a Peacehaven onslaught but to play our own game at a high tempo. The Peacehaven fight back was immediate and they took control of the game and it became them against our keeper Luke Vidler.
He made a series of excellent saves to keep us ahead with probably the best of all from a free kick where the ball was hit over the wall and somehow Luke palmed it away at full stretch with his right hand.
Another great stop was made by Kieron Austin who, running back at full stretch, somehow managed to clear the ball from the goal line.
Eventually Peacehaven did score to level on the 57th minute. Toby Cane replaced Frazer Jonhstone shortly after in midfield in a straight positional swap.
Peacehaven were still pressing but we did manage to get the ball into their half on counter attacks and as players were tiring Ian Robinson was brought on to replace William Herriott.
Shortly after Peacehaven took the lead when Luke fumbled a cross and their forward stuck the ball away. Jay was replaced by Rhys Williams and the team pressed forward looking for the equaliser to take the match into extra time but Peacehaven, in injury time, counter attacked and secured the win with their third goal.
This was a very good performance by the whole team and a million miles from their match last week, so great credit to each and every one. Special mention though for Luke Vidler who was the man of the match for his excellent goal keeping.
Team – Luke Vidler, Kieron Austin, Fenton Boakes, Jay Thornton (Rhys Williams), Daniel Green, George Collison, Thomas Turner, Frazer Johnstone (Toby Cane), William Herriott (Ian Robinson), Jonno Bennett, Max Stevens.
