Newhaven are through to the Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup after a penalty shootout win against Lingfield on Tuesday night.
The Trafalgar Ground opened its gates to fans for a competitive men’s fixture for the first time since February 1st, and they were to witness a game of two halves and eventually a Dockers win on penalties.
The hosts were well on top for the majority of the first half, missing a number of good chances, with Dockers striker Lee Robinson being particularly wasteful in front of goal.
But the second half was a lot more even and it was the visitors who broke the deadlock – Scott Johnson nodding in from close range after the ball was headed back in to the six yard box following a deep corner.
But Lingfield’s lead lasted just five minutes as Ian Robinson’s mazy run in to the box was stopped by a trip from a visiting defender. Robinson picked himself up and coolly slotted in from the spot.
That is how the score stayed at the final whistle and with the rules changing this season it meant we went straight to penalties.
Alfie Rogers, Lee Robinson and Tristan Jarvis all scored for Newhaven, who went first, but Callum Connor saw his saved.
Lingfield saw their first two miss the target and then their next two find the net. So Ian Robinson had the chance to win the game and he made no mistake for the second time in the tie, Newhaven winning 4-2 on penalties.
