Newhaven Youth 1-1 Peacehaven Youth
Last Sundays match was the home fixture against the current league leaders Peacehaven to whom we lost narrowly in the away match.
The pitch initially was frozen but it thawed out in time for the kick off which was a little delayed but the surface would test all the players. The opening minutes were fairly even as the players got used to the surface although we did create a couple of chances that were not taken. Peacehaven then had two corners in quick succession from which one shot was blocked and another cleared off our line and it was they who were taking the game to us. On the half hour mark they created a sustained attack and good goalkeeping by Steve and very good defending by us we managed to clear 4 attempts on our goal. This pressure could not last and slowly we started to take the game to Peacehaven and were rewarded with a goal just on half time. Sam went on a run down our right flank and played the ball across to Soren who passed it over for Marley to slot into the goal. 1-0 at half time.
This goal came against the run of play so the players were reminded to expect a response from Peacehaven but that if we kept to the game plan we could get a win in this game. Peacehaven did start the half on the front foot and we did not help ourselves by conceding a free kick early on but the resulting shot went over our cross bar. The half was fairly even with Peacehaven pressing for the equaliser and us soaking up the pressure and playing on the counter-attack without really causing the Peacehaven defence too many problems. This situation continued until just before the end of normal time when Peacehaven did score the equaliser from a free kick that was played into our area and the ball was headed in. 1-1. There were no further goals so at full time the score remained for a 1-1 draw.
We were disappointed not to have held on for the win but overall a draw was a fair result taking all the chances Peacehaven created in the match. Our players can take a lot of credit for the way they played especially the defensive jobs that all of them undertook at various times during the game and the result keeps our interest in the League open.
