Newhaven Ladies have won the Sussex Women’s Challenge Trophy after an enthralling 5-3 win against Burgess Hill Town at Culver Road.
The victory clinched the Dockers’ first piece of silverware, in their first ever season as a side.
Having been leading 3-0 at half-time, and in total control, Newhaven saw their opponents make a game of it in the second half, getting the score back to just a goal deficit on two occasions.
But it was woman of the match, Chloe Winchester, who sealed the game for the red and yellows, completing her hat-trick late on to end any hopes of a Burgess Hill comeback.
The Dockers enjoyed most of the play in the first half, scoring three goals without reply through Lauren Smith, Paige Ripley and Winchester.
The second half was a different story and Hill came storming back in to the contest. Jade Chapman and Millie Morley reduced the deficit to just one, but Winchester restored the two-goal advantage with a deflected effort.
Charley Law scored from a corner to again get Hill back to within a goal, but it was Winchester who wrapped the game up in injury time, driving in to the box and finishing at the near post.
The win completes the first of three trophies Newhaven are chasing, with their next fixture being a league cup semi-final at Worthing Town on Sunday afternoon. That, along with a title challenge as well, means the Dockers are in for an exciting last couple of months.
