Newhaven failed to score for the first time this season, as they exited a second cup competition in the space of four days. After bowing out of the FA Vase on Saturday, the Dockers couldn’t get past a stubborn Lancing defence and the Division One side progressed to the second round.
The visitors scored in each half of this first round tie. The first was a penalty scored by Dan Turner after he was fouled in the box, and then with 12 minutes to go Shaz Sadough doubled the advantage and killed off Newhaven’s hopes of a comeback.
The hosts made one change from the extra-time defeat at the weekend. Ryan Knight, unused on Saturday, replaced Barry Knight in the centre of defence. B. Knight joined Gary Holmes, Freddie Beale, Louis Brown and Dave Altendorff on the bench.
Newhaven started well and had the better of the chances in the opening exchanges. Lee Robinson had a shot saved by Sam Cronin, after latching on to a deflected Naim Rouane through ball, and Richie Watton was off target when he got on the end of a Robinson cutback.
Sadough was holding the ball up well for Lancing, and Graham Leach had to make a couple of routine saves from long distance shots.
18 minutes in to the game the visitors took the lead. Turner received the ball on the left and darted in to the Newhaven area. Daniel Murray stayed close and the two tangled legs. The referee pointed to the spot and Lancing had a penalty. Turner picked himself up and converted the spot-kick.
Newhaven tried to find a way back in to the game and came close when Mark Probert sent a header against the post, following some pinball in the Lancing box. Rouane also stung the palms of Cronin with a fiercely struck free-kick. 0-1 at half-time.
The second half didn’t provide many clear cut opportunities. Newhaven couldn’t get through a well organised Lancing defence and the home side were keeping out any attacks from the visitors.
That was until the 78th minute when Lancing did find a way through. Sadough twisted and turned his way in to a shooting position and fired past Leach to double their lead.
Newhaven made a couple of changes to freshen things up but were unable to force a way through and the game finished 2-0 to Lancing, who will travel to Sidley United in the second round.
