Newhaven joint managers Sean Breach and Andy Cook have been busy during pre-season and can announce 25 players have signed ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Ahead of the Dockers’ first pre-season friendly – which is against Guildford City at the Trafalagar Ground on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick off) – Breach gave us his opinion on all the retained and new signings.

Jake Buss – Delighted to keep our captain, and, in our opinion, one of the best keepers in the league. He had interest from Ryman clubs and can easily play at that level.

Paul Woods – A great young keeper who does go away to university for most of the season, but is certainly good enough for first team level, as proven when he came in for a few games last season.

Freddie Beale – Signing for his seventh season with the club but still such a young player. Freddie’s work commitments mean he cannot commit to every game, which is a shame as last season he was superb in every game he played in and can cover in many positions across the pitch.

Harry Docherty – Harry is another versatile player who can play anywhere across the back four and in midfield. At 19 years old he is a great talent and one we tried to sign last season, but he went to Saltdean instead before transferring across in early 2018 and became a regular immediately.

Matt Gunn – Gunny was dual-signed with Lewes last year, however, was ever present and was voted our Young Player of the Year 2018. Still only 19 but is a fantastic centre back and someone we see as a future Captain. Very mature and we are excited to see him improve under us even more.

Rob Malila – Rob is 17 and will be dual-signed with Whitehawk again after winning the league with their Under-18s last season. He came in late last season for us, making a handful of appearances, and never put a foot wrong in any of them. A very big talent and someone we feel will have a very bright future in the game.

Conor Sidwell – Someone who will be well known to the Dockers after signing in 2013-14 and playing a big part in our three cup triumphs over the past 4 four years. He signed for Peacehaven for the 2017-18 but has decided to come back this season. Still only 22 but a very mature defender and we are absolutely delighted to have him back.

Ben Earle – Ben is another youngster who has come through the ranks with Newhaven FC. He has played many first team games at left back over the past three seasons and will only get better and better. Has an excellent left foot and very comfortable on the ball.

Robbie Keith – Robbie is a 19 year old centre back and came in late last season after a horrible injury that kept him out for most of the season. He made a huge impact, was outstanding in our run in and was one of our top performers. Will dual-sign with Whitehawk first team as he is highly regarded by Jude (Whitehawk Manager).

Jayson Sowter – ‘Sowts’ has been ever present for us the past seven years and is now one of the more senior players. He has been in and out the side for various reasons but we think he is one of the best midfielders in the league on his day and when he puts his mind to it. Hopefully this season we can get a full season out of him which will be massive for us.

Tristan Jarvis – Tristan was a new signing last year and was fantastic for us. Was very close to being our player of the year and put in some exceptional performances – the Lewes FA Cup game comes to mind where he was one of the best players on the pitch. A box-to-box player who has everything and we are delighted he has stayed after being approached by a few clubs with big budgets in this league.

James Rhodes – One of the most gifted players we have seen at Newhaven for some time and has adopted a deeper role over the past two or three years and has been influential in our recent cup wins. This will be Rhodesy’s sixth season with us.

Aaron Winser – A local 17 year old who had a great season with the Under-18s and 21s last season, winning many awards. He was regularly involved with the first team squad and someone we see as being a key member in the squad in a few years time. A fantastic prospect for the club.

Matt Ford – A new signing for us. Matt is 28 and is a local lad, however, he has been working in London for the past several years and has been playing for West Essex FC and also had a spell with Brighton as a youngster. A player who can play in many positions and we are excited to have him him with us.

Seb Saunders – Seb will be signing for his third season now and a local lad who has great experience at 24 years old. Can play in many positions and will be a really key player for us this season. Great on the ball, bundles of energy and great in the changing room.

Olly Davies – Olly is another who has been ever present with us for some time now. One who can play in many different positions and you will never get anything other than hard work and quality wherever he plays. Fantastic in the changing room as well.

Jack Whitmore – Jack is a 20 year old midfielder and someone we have kept an eye on the past two years, and tried to sign a couple of times, and we are really pleased he has joined us this season. He is young, technically brilliant and has experience of playing at a higher level with Shoreham and Lewes. He also played for Haywards Heath where he won the double last season.

Ben Dartnall – ‘Darts’ has vast experience at this level having played for various County sides. He is a real leader on the pitch and vital to have around with such a young squad here. Great in the air, strong in the tackle and looking like his injury issues are behind him.

Tom Cooklin – Tom is 17 and came in late last season, was heavily involved with us and really impressed. Will be dual-signed with Whitehawk again where he won the Under-18s league last season. A fantastic winger who has great energy and quality and delighted to see him grow even more as a player.

Ian Robinson – Ian is one who progressed through the ranks at the club and has been a key part of our first team the past two years. He is only 22 and can play at full back or in any attacking position. He is pacey, skilful and has real quality on the ball.

Kyle Woolven – Kyle progressed through the ranks at the club and quickly established himself as a first team regular a few seasons ago. Has huge potential, is quick and very skilful and still only 19 years old. Has scored some great goals already for the club.

Lee Robinson – Absolutely delighted to retain the services of our top scorer as he is always wanted by clubs with big budgets and higher up the league. Robbo has scored an astonishing amount of goals for us and seems to improve year on year. Quick, deadly and our Mr Newhaven.

Callum Connor – Cal is 22 and a striker who has been with us for some time now, however he has been playing in Wales where he went to university. Delighted that Cal has now finished and will be back full time which is huge for us. He is quick, strong and powerful and is an excellent finisher.

Ebou Jallow – Ebs has been ever present with us now for the past seven years and can play in various positions. A very popular player who is great in the air, has an eye for goal and can find that killer pass. Has featured heavily in all our recent cup wins proving what a big player he has been for us.

Alfie Haggar – Alfie is another Under-18 who excelled for them and the 21s last season. Was regularly involved in first team squads but didn’t make his debut, but we have no doubt he will get plenty of chances in the near future as he is an excellent talent.

There has also been an addition to the coaching staff at the club, which sees Graham Roe join as goalkeeper coach.

On the appointment of Roe, Breach said: “Graham is an ex goalkeeper of Newhaven FC and a local lad who is regularly down watching us. He is known to the management team and we are really pleased to have Graham as part of our management set up.”

The Dockers have a tough pre-season schedule lined up which will include seeing them host Bostik sides Haywards Heath Town and Hastings United.
